The exquisite and beautiful lacquer boxes from Russia are miniature works of art in themselves, each piece delicately hand decorated in oils and watercolours by experienced and talented artists. This soon won a reputation in Europe for its high quality, artistic brilliance and its affinity with the tradition of Russian culture. This hereditary art of icon painting in the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, lead to the development of miniature painting on lacquered objects, due to the supression of religious painting during the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The miniaturist looks for subjects stemming from the countryside, traditional folk culture, fairy tales, songs, historical legends and scenes of folklore. These small and simply constructed boxes, decorated with deep lacquered surfaces and sparkling with bright colours, are comparable with articles of jewellery. The colour schemes are built on bright contrasting colours, reds, blues and greens. Gold leaf and Mother of Pearl are used sparingly to stunning effect. The overall appearance of the lacquer work from the famous icon painting villages of Palekh, Mystyora, Kholui and Fedoskino is one of absolute beauty and a delight to both look upon and own. They are becoming amongst the most collectable items in the world and in our opinion will be the antiques of the future.
